Isaiah Chapter 47

  • Isaiah 47:1 Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.

The judgment of Babylon is covered in this chapter. Babylonian people descended from the Chaldeans. They thought themselves great and mighty, a nation that would last forever but they were not. God chose this nation to judge Israel and Judah because Israel and Judah preferred the way of Babylon and even started trusting in the idols of that nation. God allowed the very nation they were desiring to be like, to take them into captivity. Now Babylon had become exalted in itself and full of pride. They thought that they had the power to do with Israel what they pleased without restraint. Their sin was multiplied and judgment was swift.

  • Isaiah 47:2 Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.
  • 3 Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man.
  • 4 As for our redeemer, the LORD of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.

Their time of judgment had come because of their treatment of Israel. God used them to judge Israel for their sins but they exalted themselves and misused the power they received from God. They did not acknowledge the true God but trusted in idols, sorcery and other methods for so-called divine help. Working with millstones was work for slaves. This represented the humiliation they were to receive. No longer would they command slaves to do all their work but they would have to work themselves.

  • Isaiah 47:5 Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.

Babylon was no longer to be the lady of kingdoms that had power over the whole empire. All prophecies concerning Babylon is yet to be fulfilled. They were not destroyed by the Medes and Persians. Cyrus took over Babylon but didn't destroy it and it was still inhabited. In the latter days they will be completely destroyed and that will fulfill all prophecies concerning it.

  • Isaiah 47:6 I was wroth with my people, I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou didst show them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke.

Babylon was no longer to be the lady of kingdoms that had power over the whole empire.

God tells here how He used Babylon because of His anger toward the disobedient people but He also rakes them over the coals for showing Israel no mercy.

  • Isaiah 47:7 And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it.

They exalted themselves thinking that their greatness would be forever. Actually Israel is the only nation that the bible guarantees will last forever.

This should show warning to any nation that become great and mighty and dares to exalt themselves too highly. At the very word of God a nation stands or falls. I fear for the United States that has allowed God to be mocked, thrown out of schools by liberal judges and agencies that sue and go courts to force removal of any teaching of the bible. They have substituted evolution in place of the teaching of creation. They call it permissible because it is supposed to be a science instead of religion. Creation they say is a religion so must be forbidden. As a result lies are allowed and truth is forbidden because it happens to be classed as a religion.

Oh how exalted we have become to think that we will last forever in our greatness and not be judged. We have allowed mothers and their so-called doctors to kill little innocent unborn babies up until the moment they are ready to be delivered.

Oh how we exalt ourselves if we think God is silently excusing our sin. God judged other nations that have done these things, do we think that we shall escape?

WE in the United States are guilty more so than those that came before us. WE KNOW BETTER. We are educated, informed, knowledgeable. We have had the teaching and preaching of the word continuously since the founding of this nation. We have had the bible brought from the old country from the founding of this nation. WE KNOW BETTER. We cannot claim ignorance like maybe Sodom and Gomorrah can, we cannot claim ignorance like the heathen nations of paganism. WE KNOW BETTER.

  • Isaiah 47:8 Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:

Babylon was given to pleasure and fun. "They dwelled carelessly without restraint or repentance." Does not this remind us of our own country? What was once considered wrong is right and what once was considered right is wrong. They call good, evil and evil, good.

We allow the murder of innocent babies but woe to those who cannot prove they have liability insurance. We care more about automobiles polluting the air than the lives of these innocent ones being snuffed out. Where are our priorities? Are we not straining at gnats and swallowing camels? We read history and decry slavery, sacrificing live people and animals to idols, and we cringe when we see one tribe wiping out another on the news. Yet in our own country we are allowing the same thing to take place in the abortion mills.

Our young people are confused, they do not know right from wrong. We are surprised when they kill and bring guns to school. We blame the gun industry instead of ourselves. When we allow the murder of the unborn, where do they draw the line in their minds. When a child can be killed when halfway out of the womb of its mother, and it is legal, how are the young people going to learn that it is wrong to kill.

  • Isaiah 47:9 But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.

Babylon was judged swiftly but the judgment has not fully been fulfilled. There is a latter day fulfillment also.

  • Isaiah 47:10 For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me.

Babylon imagined that no one saw them, that they could get away with anything and that God did not care or did not exist.

This is the same attitude I see today in the US. We are so prosperous that we think everything is fine. It is not. God sees everything. We may think we are getting by with sin but we will not. Nations will be judged no matter how big and powerful they become if they reject Godís right to rule them in righteousness.

Salvation can come only by turning to God and repenting. As an individual, as a family, as a nation we can repent. We cannot force everyone to repent but we can choose for ourselves to deny the way of the world and the sins of society and receive the salvation that comes through Jesus Christ.

Coming to Christ is similar to coming out of Babylon which represented sin and rebellion against God and His teachings. We are safe in Christ from the judgment that is to come upon the whole world. Do not seek to be like everyone else and to follow the crowd. The crowd is wrong, the majority is not the right way. Follow God and His word, it is the only safe way to go.

If our trust is in social security, Medicare, the stock market, the power of our great nation or any other thing, it is walking on shaky ground that could tumble any minute. We need to put our trust completely on Jesus Christ our savior. God and God alone will get us through the days ahead.

  • Isaiah 47:11 Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know .

This prophecy refers to Babylon and judgment did come to them swiftly. Only part of the prophecy concerning Babylon has been fulfilled. There is a future fall of Babylon coming. Whether it will be literal Babylon revived, another country similar to Babylon, or a religious system, I'm not sure of but we do not have to be a part of it if our faith and trust is in Jesus Christ. He is our lifeline.

The best way to avoid being included in judgment is to study the Old Testament where God sends judgment and find out why. Then we can make sure we are not guilty of the same things. The thing that causes all sin is to first forsake God. Second to forsake His word and teachings and then pretty soon, we start denying his right to interfere with our lives, after that we start denying His existence entirely. This is what has happened in our society. Then creeps in all other sins from which we have no hope or escape if we have cast off our faith in God.

  • Isaiah 47:12 Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.
  • 13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.
  • 14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.
  • 15 Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.

A nation that turns from God and begins to deny His right to rule them and a nation that then starts to deny His existence and find an alternate reason for the existence of life is headed for destruction.

In the Day of Judgment, the scientists will not be able to come up with a solution like we see in the movies with a happy ending. The president everyone backs no matter what he does will not be able to save the nation. The businessmen will not be able to stop it. Money, power, wealth will not stop it. Other nations will not come to the rescue. There will be no help for those who have forsake the fountain of life and chose the unbelief and sin of the world. Evolution will not save us. The finest education will not prevail. Without God we will not survive as a nation. No nation has in the past and no nation will in the future. We need our creator.

  • Eccleciastics 12:1  Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

To forget who created us brings confusion and mental instability.

  • Romans 1:28  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

It is very dangerous and perilous to deny our creator and cast away the knowledge of the Lord.
