Jeremiah Chapter 33

  • Jeremiah 33:1 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying,
  • 2 Thus saith the LORD the maker thereof, the LORD that formed it, to establish it; the LORD is his name;
  • 3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

What a wonderful promise here from God. This was a word to Jeremiah that if he would just call on Him in sincerity, He will show him great and mighty things. I believe this is one of those promises that is available to all who believe in Him and are willing to obey Him and walk in His ways. This prophecy by Jeremiah was originally given to Israel as a nation but there are some promises that apply to all who believe. If we are either without God or without the knowledge of God and His word, then it is our own fault. God is willing that we understand and seek Him.

  • Jeremiah 33:4 For thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are thrown down by the mounts, and by the sword;
  • 5 They come to fight with the Chaldeans, but it is to fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have slain in mine anger and in my fury, and for all whose wickedness I have hid my face from this city.
  • 6 Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth.
  • 7 And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first.

God sent judgment first but afterward shows them plainly that they will be restored and re-built.

  • Jeremiah 33:8 And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me.

Here we see the heart of God. God desires to cleanse from iniquity. God cannot dwell with sin and does not want us to live in sin because that sin separates us from Him. Here God promises to cleanse them from iniquity and forgive their sin. God knew at this time in history that He would one day send Jesus Christ to save the people from their sin. We know this today but Israel did not know this then and many do not see this yet but they will.

  • Jeremiah 33:9 And it shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honor before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them: and they shall fear and tremble for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I procure unto it.

This is what Israel was to be. A name of joy, praise and honor before all the nations of the earth. God chose Israel to bring forth the Messiah. This was promised to Abraham, to Isaac and then to Jacob who became Israel. The savior of the whole world was to come from Israel. It is a shame that when He came the the religious establishment did not recognize Him, but the fishermen, and many others did. All of them will recognize the savior one day and then these prophecies shall come to pass.

  • Jeremiah 33:10 Thus saith the LORD; Again there shall be heard in this place, which ye say shall be desolate without man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolate, without man, and without inhabitant, and without beast,

This is the power of God to make desolate, hopeless places become as described in verse 11 below...full of joy, gladness and praise to the Lord.

  • Jeremiah 33:11 The voice of joy, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the voice of them that shall say, Praise the LORD of hosts: for the LORD is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: and of them that shall bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the LORD. For I will cause to return the captivity of the land, as at the first, saith the LORD.

This happened at the return from Babylonian captivity and also again in part in 1948 when the nation Israel became a nation again after hundred's of years without a nation. All the prophecy concerning Israel has not yet taken place but, as we can clearly see every time we pick up a newspaper, it is coming to fruition. It will happen.

  • Jeremiah 33:12 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Again in this place, which is desolate without man and without beast, and in all the cities thereof, shall be an habitation of shepherds causing their flocks to lie down.
  • 13 In the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the vale, and in the cities of the south, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, shall the flocks pass again under the hands of him that telleth them, saith the LORD.
  • 14 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah.
  • 15 In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.

This is the promise of Christ the Messiah and savior of the world. This Branch of righteousness is Jesus Christ. He was promised all through the Old Testament even in the writings of Moses. This is the way of salvation to all who believe. This is the freedom from sin. This is the promise of the one who will reconcile us to God after sin separated us from in in the garden of Eden. Great is that Holy name which offers us eternal life. Great is the promise that God did not forget mankind and did not desire to leave human beings in their lost condition.

  • Jeremiah 33:16 In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The LORD our righteousness.

This same Jesus Christ will cause salvation to return to the Jewish people and they shall dwell safely. This will include all those who believe in the name of Jesus Christ that are not Jews also. We become adopted into the vine of Israel when we are "born again" by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • Jeremiah 33:17 For thus saith the LORD; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel;

This part is not yet fulfilled but will be after the return of Jesus Christ to the earth.

  • Jeremiah 33:18 Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt offerings, and to kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually.
  • 19 And the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah, saying,
  • 20 Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season;
  • 21 Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.
  • 22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured: so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me.
  • 23 Moreover the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying,
  • 24 Considerest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which the LORD hath chosen, he hath even cast them off? thus they have despised my people, that they should be no more a nation before them.
  • 25 Thus saith the LORD; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth;
  • 26 Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.

Just as God causes the day and night to continue and not fail so will His promise be to Israel. He will bring in a new covenant because they broke the old covenant by their sin and idolatry. All these prophecies have not yet come to pass but are yet to be fulfilled concerning Israel and Jerusalem.

The prophecies of the Messiah and the Branch mentioned in verse 15 have come to pass in part. Jesus Christ was the Messiah or Branch. He came the first time over 2000 years ago. He came the first time to be rejected by His own people. By their rejection, Jesus Christ was crucified and died on the cross paying the price of sin for all mankind. After three days He rose again and returned to God His Father awaiting the time of His second return. At His second coming Israel will be saved and restored fulfilling the final prophecies of the Old Testament and the New Testament.

The Gentiles are part of this by faith in Jesus Christ. The great part of all these wonderful things is that salvation is for all who believe now. We don't have to wait until Jesus comes back again. Salvation can be ours now. We can actually know personally Jesus Christ at this present time. He is not dead but alive and will send His Holy Spirit to live in our lives today if we just ask Him to come to us.

Each individual, child or adult can have eternal life right now. That means at the time of the physical death of the body, the soul and spirit goes to be with God and never dies. At the return of Jesus Christ literally back to the earth, the soul and body of believers shall receive a new body than can never die or be lost. This is the great hope of all mankind. We can be forgiven of sin and saved. Through the fall of Adam and Eve physical death and spiritual death came upon all human beings. Through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ who suffered and died for the sins of all mankind, eternal life is offered to all who believe. He died and He lives today to save all who will receive  Him. We call Him the second Adam who brought all who believe out of the curse.

This is the plan of God to redeem all men back to God. This is the only way to be saved from the wrath to come. There is no other way and no other religion can deliver the soul from sin and grant that soul eternal life. We must repent of sin and accept this gift of God, Jesus Christ in order to be saved. To neglect this way is to be lost forever without God. Jesus is that Branch of righteousness and the only way of salvation. This salvation is for the Jews and the Gentiles.

More about that Branch:

  • Isaiah 4:2 In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.
  • 3 And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem:
  • 4 When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.

What shall wash away my sin, nothing but the blood of Jesus. Oh precious is the flow, that makes me white as snow. No other fount I know, Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  • Isaiah 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
  • 2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;
  • 3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
  • 4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

We see that this branch shall rule the earth.

  • Jeremiah 23:5 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
  • 6 In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

This branch or Messiah has to come from the lineage of David. We see that through Joseph and Mary the lineage of Jesus Christ did come from David. That made Jesus eligible to be a king through Joseph even though Joseph was not the real father of Jesus.

This branch is the Son of God who will bring in everlasting righteousness upon the earth. Peace will never come until the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. There will be one called the antichrist who will claim to be one who brings peace but actually he will bring more destruction than any before him including Hitler. His days will be short because of the mercy of God. The coming of Jesus Christ the second time will destroy the power of the antichrist.

We do not have to be deceived and follow any other Christ except the Lord Jesus Christ who came to save us. We can believe and receive Him now. Now is the day of salvation. We don't have to wait for His second coming. We can become a child of God through faith in Jesus Christ now.
