Psalm Chapter 108

A Song or Psalm of David.

  • Psalm 108:1 O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory.
  • 2 Awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.
  • 3 I will praise thee, O LORD, among the people: and I will sing praises unto thee among the nations.

How many of us acknowledge God in front of all we meet or do we hide the fact that we are believers in God and His word? We cannot share the gospel and reach the world for Jesus Christ if we are ashamed of Him or ashamed to mention His name.

His name does bring offense. He said that it would. The very mention of Jesus inside a United States public school rises the ire of the the anti-God people faster than any other name. You can speak of any other deity or name but if you mention the name of the king of kings and the Lord of Lords it brings offense.

  • Matthew 11:6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

Jesus said that we are happy or blessed if we are not offended in Him.

  • Mark 8:38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

If we are ashamed of Him, He will be ashamed of us at His coming.

  • Psalm 108:4 For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds.

It is His great love and mercy that we are offered the gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ which brings us eternal life. Why should we ever be ashamed of the one who died that we might live?

Paul said:

  • Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

  • Psalm 108:5 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: and thy glory above all the earth;
  • 6 That thy beloved may be delivered: save with thy right hand, and answer me.
  • 7 God hath spoken in his holiness; I will rejoice, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth.
  • 8 Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver;

Judah is the lawgiver. Judah was the tribe from which God chose to bring forth His own Son, the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

  • Psalm 108:9 Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe; over Philistia will I triumph.
  • 10 Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?
  • 11 Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off? and wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our hosts?
  • 12 Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.

If our trust is in man, it will fail. Only trust in God brings help and in the end, everlasting life.

  • Psalm 108:13 Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.

When we study the psalms, we see prophecy woven through it. Sometimes the prophecy is for that particular time and sometimes it is for the future. Sometimes it has a double meaning for David's time but also hints of the kingdom to come.

If we look closely at the psalms we can see Jesus the Messiah. Jesus is the one that is to come to deliver Israel from enemies and set up a righteous kingdom. What some fail to see is that Jesus had to come first to be an offering for sin. We can't enter the kingdom of God without getting rid of the sin. This is why Israel failed to recognize their Messiah the first time around. They were expecting a warrior to free them from the Romans.

True it is that deliverance is prophesied in the scriptures, but that will come in the future. Jesus had to pay the price for sin and make the way for not only Jews but all who would receive Him to be saved FROM SIN. God cannot allow sin in the kingdom to come or else sin and suffering would continue forever. The kingdom of God will not have sin in it; so in order for us to inherit this kingdom and everlasting life, we have to get rid of sin. Since we can't do that by ourselves because of our weak flesh, we have to trust in Jesus to take away our sins and give us His Holy Spirit to help us to not want to return to sin.

We could all try to keep the whole law of God and not offend in any point like Jesus did, but that is impossible for us. Sooner or later we would break the law in some point. Jesus was that sacrifice for the sins of all mankind. Faith in Him cancels out our sin if we receive Him as Lord of our lives. To receive Him we must repent of sin and come to Him trusting in Him to give us salvation and eternal life. God wants to save us more than we want to be saved. God delights to give eternal life to as many as would receive Him.

  • John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
  • 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
  • 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
  • 15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
  • 16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
  • 17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved. He is the only true way to God. God loves you more than any other person in the whole entire world. How many of us would allow our children to die to save someone else?  Read the bible and learn more of this wonderful God we can truly get to know ourselves.  DC
