Psalm Chapter 132

A Song of degrees.

  • Psalm 132:1  LORD, remember David, and all his afflictions:
  • 2 How he sware unto the LORD, and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob;
  • 3 Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed;
  • 4 I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids,
  • 5 Until I find out a place for the LORD, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.

It bothered David to have a nice palace to live in and no temple for the worship of God. Because of the many battles and fighting during David's reign, God did not allow him to build a house of God. He promised to allow the son of David to build it. Solomon did indeed build the temple but it was just a forerunner of the temple built by another Son of David, Jesus, who was really the Son of God. Jesus would build the everlasting temple to come during His reign in the latter days. This also could be a sign that David Himself was not the one to build the spiritual house but He who is called the Son of David in years to come. There will be a latter day temple built after the anti-christ defiles the one built just before his (the man of sin- antichrist) arrival. So some bible scholars believe there is two temples to be built in the future. One by man and one by the Lord Jesus Himself. We call that the millennial temple.

Believers in Jesus Christ do not have to wait for the literal temple that is to come. And it will come. Our bodies are the temple of the Lord. There will be a literal temple built but the temple of the Lord also is within all believers in Jesus. We are temples of the Holy Spirit which comes to all who repent of sin and turn to the savior, Jesus our Christ.

  • Psalm 132:6 Lo, we heard of it at Ephratah: we found it in the fields of the wood.
  • 7 We will go into his tabernacles: we will worship at his footstool.
  • 8 Arise, O LORD, into thy rest; thou, and the ark of thy strength.
  • 9 Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness; and let thy saints shout for joy.
  • 10 For thy servant David's sake turn not away the face of thine anointed.
  • 11 The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.

This fruit of the body of David is none other than Jesus Christ. Because of Jesus we don't have to be in Jerusalem to worship God but we can worship Him in spirit and in truth no matter where we are. This occurs because we have been born again by the spirit of God and we worship through the spirit. That does not depend on a place, such as a temple, church, or synagogue.

  • John 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
    24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Through Jesus, not only is this salvation for the Jews but also the whole world that will receive Him.

  • John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
  • 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
  • 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

What a beautiful thought....To as many that receive Jesus, to them He gives power to become the very sons of God.

  • Psalm 132:12 If thy children will keep my covenant and my testimony that I shall teach them, their children shall also sit upon thy throne for evermore.

They failed to keep the commandments of God so they do not sit on the throne of David. Jesus Christ did not fail and at His Second Coming He will be eligible to sit on the throne of David.

  • Luke 1:31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
  • 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
  • 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Friends, this is the way. God made a way and we can walk in that way. It is truth, it is life everlasting, it is peace and it is joy.

  • Psalm 132:13 For the LORD hath chosen Zion; he hath desired it for his habitation.
    14 This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it.
    15 I will abundantly bless her provision: I will satisfy her poor with bread.
    16 I will also clothe her priests with salvation: and her saints shall shout aloud for joy.
    17 There will I make the horn of David to bud: I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed.
    18 His enemies will I clothe with shame: but upon himself shall his crown flourish.

There will be great rejoicing for faithful believers when this day arrives. The dead in Christ shall rise and all shall be gathered who are in Christ Jesus. We shall dwell in safety forever. There will be no more death, sorrow, pain or suffering. This is accomplished by faith in Jesus Christ alone and trusting in Him to remove our sins and grant us eternal life. This is now available to all who believe. We can be part of this rejoicing David is speaking about in this psalm. This promise was to Israel who was always surrounded by enemies. A deliverer was promised to save them from all their enemies by a Son of David that was to come. God sent this promised one first to save us from sin and then secondly to set up His everlasting kingdom. Before we can enter the kingdom we have to first be set free from sin.  DC
