Psalm Chapter 82

A Psalm of Asaph.

  • Psalm 82:1 God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods.

Some bible scholars believe the gods mentioned here are judges.

  • Psalm 82:2 How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah.

This should be a warning to all unjust judges. If they are a respecter of persons, they sin against God. If they judge to please a certain group of people that elect them, they are not good judges. A judge should be impartial and do things fairly. That office is a high calling and must be conducted without respect of persons. Also they need to avoid furthering one's own political agenda. I have seen lately a lot of selective prosecution and going after political opponents. This should never be.

Sometimes judges have gone beyond their calling and even try to make the laws. The law in the United States allowing abortion on demand was the direct result of judges, not Congress. Yes  judges can be wrong. Abortion is a sin. It is murder. That was one time that the Supreme Court was wrong. Another time was when the courts allowed slavery and considered the black race to be only half a person.

  • Psalm 82:3 Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.

Judges should defend the poor and not just rule in favor of the rich. They also should not do the opposite and rule in favor of a poor man who just doesn't want to work and uses frivolous lawsuits to fleece the rich.

  • Psalm 82:4 Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.

Before America existed there was no favor given to the poor. In this the United States has excelled. We do care for the poor and have taken care of those that are needy. At least that is what I thought. I'm wondering now if they are kept poor so that they depend on the government so they keep voting for the party that claims to care for them. It has gone so far the other way now and people have gotten so dependent on government programs that some try to cheat the system and fleece the rich because they are too lazy to work. This hurts those that really are needy and causes them to suffer so much red tape and delays to get the help they need. Balance is needed here. Good judges can help us keep a good fair and balanced system. Judges need to be impartial, not willing to take bribes or be threatened into making a decision in favor of those in power.

We are now discovering that some of the poor have been exploited in order to obtain votes for a certain political party. The idea is to keep them poor and dependent on the government so wicked politicians can keep getting voted in. To really care about the poor, is to work to get them jobs so they can make a living and get themselves out of poverty and have some self respect. There is always exceptions to this but as a whole to get people the right kind of help is the best.

  • Psalm 82:5 They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.
  • 6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.
  • 7 But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.
  • 8 Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations.

Judges are just men and die like everyone else only to face the real judge of all the earth. We need to fear God, not please men. God is the final judge and the answer to the salvation of all mankind. To Him should we fear and not give in to the temporary fear of men who die and leave this earth. If we please men and judge the way men want us to, we cannot please God.

We need judges who fear God and fear His commandments. Our laws originally came from God's law. If we forsake God's commandments where are we going to get any absolutes to judge people by? DC
