Psalm Chapter 107

  • Psalm 107:1 O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
  • 2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;
  • 3 And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south.
  • 4 They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.
  • 5 Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
  • 6 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.
  • 7 And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.

This psalm gives praise and thanks for the deliverance of Israel from the land of their enemies unto a land God prepared for them to dwell in. This was a miracle from God. God gave them many signs and miracles. That is why it was such a sin for them to begin to murmur and complain. When they complained it was complaining against God Himself. It showed unbelief even after many miracles.

This is why the word needs to be taught in all our churches, schools and homes. Also praise and  worship. If we are faithful to God and keep His word, we will see the miracles. There will be times  of testing when the miracles cease. Then we are to stay faithful keeping the word in our hearts. If all we live on is emotions and memories of the good times, it will fail us. The word is what strengthens us. When we have the word within us, we will not fail.

  • Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

It is so important for us not to forsake the teaching of the word and replace it with words of men even if they are good. Books, online preaching etc. are all good as boosters of faith and exhortation but it doesn't replace our one on one study of the actual word of God. The bible. We have to have the word in our hearts.

  • Psalm 107:8 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

The reading and studying of the word will keep praise in our hearts.

  • Psalm 107:9 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

This is more than food and provisions that are necessary to live on. When God fills the hungry, it is with spiritual food. It is with His word. We need this food as well as the natural food for our bodies.

  • Psalm 107:10 Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;
  • 11 Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:
  • 12 Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.

Many times bondage was decreed upon Israel because they forgot God and begin to sin against God. When we allow sin to separate us from God, His protection isn't there like when we walked in His fellowship. This does not mean that we don't go through trials and heartache in this life even though we have not sinned against the Lord, but the Lord is with us in those trials to bring us through them. We are never alone. Somethings we do bring on ourselves because of sin or forsaking the Lord but some things happen because we live in a fallen world but in the end, we will rise with new bodies that can never die if we belong to Jesus our Lord.

  • Psalm 107:13 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.

God is merciful and when a nation or an individual repents and cries to Him, He will hear.

  • Psalm 107:14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.
  • 15 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

God's mercy is anther reason to rejoice and praise the Lord.

  • Psalm 107:16 For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.
  • 17 Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.
  • 18 Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.
  • 19 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.
  • 20 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.

Many times sin caused the troubles of Israel but when they cried unto the Lord, God would miraculously deliver them from their enemies.

  • Psalm 107:21 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
  • 22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.
  • 23 They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;
  • 24 These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep.
  • 25 For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.
  • 26 They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.
  • 27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end.
  • 28 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
  • 29 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
  • 30 Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.

This is an example of all of us when we are tossed to and fro with sin in our lives. When we are living in sin we are separated from God. Troubles abound within us. We are cast down and evil is around us continually. There is no peace and wickedness invades our thoughts. We are hopeless and our souls are bound for an eternal hell.

God sent us an intercessor. He sent us one to redeem our souls from the power of death. He sent us Jesus Christ who paid the price for all our sins with His own death that was undeserved. Jesus  could do that because He had never once sinned in any point so He did not break any law of God. The law is what shows us what sin is and how we are guilty before God. Jesus did not break the law so when He was put to death, He suffered the penalty of death when He did nothing to deserve it. His death can then count on the behalf of those that have sinned and deserve the penalty of death. In order for it to count on our behalf though we have to just simply believe and receive Him into our lives. We show God that we believe when we repent or turn from sin and turn to the savior who died to save us from sin.

Jesus was raised from the dead to make the way for all who trust in Him to also have the hope of resurrection from the dead. As He conquered death, we also who believe will conquer death.

  • Romans 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
  • Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Oh why do so many ignore, make light of and refuse this good way. Life eternal, life of walking in the spirit of God is ours to receive. Fellowship with God both before and after we depart this present life is worth more than anything else we could gain or acquire.

  • Psalm 107:31 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
  • 32 Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
  • 33 He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground;
  • 34 A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.
  • 35 He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.
  • 36 And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation;
  • 37 And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase.
  • 38 He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.

When a group of people turn from sin and trust in the Lord, it will affect their lives both in the natural as well as the spiritual. God will bless in things that bring increase. The thing that we have to watch is that in our times of increase that we do not get comfortable and forget God who blesses us. He gives us good things so that we can share them with others and help the hurting. We are not to get exalted and keep it all to ourselves or we will lose it. We need to be careful not to become greedy, unthankful and complaining.

Sometimes when I read about people in the United States complaining about their jobs it makes me tremble. I'm not talking of the poor and low income but the ones who have high paying jobs with health benefits. They continually want more and demand more from companies and complain instead of being thankful.

Do you not think that God does not hear our complaints? When millions barely have enough to eat in the world and we complain because our holiday pay isn't enough. It makes me fear that it may be taken away. Being thankful makes it more likely to have an increase then complaining, going on strike and bashing the companies that gave us the jobs in the first place. We have become unthankful and unholy.

  • Psalm 107:39 Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.
  • 40 He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way.
  • 41 Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock.
  • 42 The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.
  • 43 Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.

Being thankful for every thing great and small will open our eyes to the lovingkindness of the Lord. The above verse 39 has the word minished. It means to diminish. DC

  • 1Timothy 6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
  • 4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
  • 5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
  • 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
  • 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
    8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
  • 9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
  • 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
  • 11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
  • 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
