Leviticus Chapter 2

  • Leviticus 2:1 And when any will offer a meat offering unto the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon:
  • 2 And he shall bring it to Aaron's sons the priests: and he shall take therefrom his handful of the flour thereof, and of the oil thereof, with all the frankincense thereof; and the priest shall burn the memorial of it upon the altar, to be an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD:
  • 3 And the remnant of the meat offering shall be Aaron's and his sons': it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire.

This type of offering shows one's love to those that are in the service of the Lord like the priests and Levites set apart to serve the temple and the altar.

Since the perfect way and unchangeable priesthood through Jesus Christ had not yet come, the Lord set aside the whole tribe of Levi for the service of worship and interceding for the sins of the other tribes. The blood of animals could not take away sin but they pointed toward the way that was to come and that was the sacrifice of Jesus Christ once and for all.

Once an offering for sin was made, it covered their sin but didn't get rid of it entirely. The sacrifice was good only until they sinned again, then another sacrifice would have to be done. This is why they needed priests and prophets in the Old Testament.

Through Christ, the blood of Jesus doesn't just cover sins, it cleanses us from sin. We actually are given power over sin and we do not have to sin any more.

We are cleansed of sin and are not just having our sins covered. We do not have to offer sacrifices over and over since Jesus did that one time. Faith in Him and what He did for us will bring us into this place where we become a child of God and are born again by the spirit of God. It is a new and living way. There is now no need for the Levitical priesthood because it is done away with in Christ.

  • Leviticus 2:4 And if thou bring an oblation of a meat offering baked in the oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, or unleavened wafers anointed with oil.
  • 5 And if thy oblation be a meat offering baked in a pan, it shall be of fine flour unleavened, mingled with oil.
  • 6 Thou shalt part it in pieces, and pour oil thereon: it is a meat offering.
  • 7 And if thy oblation be a meat offering baked in the frying pan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil.
  • 8 And thou shalt bring the meat offering that is made of these things unto the LORD: and when it is presented unto the priest, he shall bring it unto the altar.
  • 9 And the priest shall take from the meat offering a memorial thereof, and shall burn it upon the altar: it is an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.
  • 10 And that which is left of the meat offering shall be Aaron's and his sons': it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire.

The meat or meal offering is a sweet savor or a pleasing offering acceptable to God. It is an offering of service bringing an offering of the work of one's hands or service. This shows love to God in service and work. It is a first fruit offering from the labor of hands. It is to be offered by giving a portion to God in the form of a burnt offering. The rest of the offering was given to the priests signifying a type of tithes and offerings to support the Levitical priesthood.

  • Leviticus 2:11 No meat offering, which ye shall bring unto the LORD, shall be made with leaven: for ye shall burn no leaven, nor any honey, in any offering of the LORD made by fire.

Leaven represents evil or a mixture of good and evil. It actually decays and pollutes. Honey smells bad when it is burnt so honey was not used in a burnt offering.

All this is a picture of the perfect way to come. Everything had to be done a certain way. Worship of God was holy and pure. They couldn't just waltz in and start worshipping God in any manner.

They couldn't just offer any sacrifice in any manner showing us that a perfect way of worship was coming and there was only one way to get to God and that is through one way, even Jesus Christ.

We are to come to God now through Jesus Christ and to worship now we first come to Jesus to be cleanses of sin then we begin to worship God in spirit and in truth. Our hearts must be clean through the word and through the spirit. We come in a respectful, reverent manner seeking God with awesome love and respect.

Never should we go to a place of worship in a disrespectful or irreverent manner taking the grace of God or the presence of God lightly or half-heartedly.

This does not mean that we can't shout and sing with joy and gladness because the whole book of Psalms indicate that God is to be worshipped in that manner but it must be in sincerity and in reverence remembering whose presence is present with us. Also worship is to be done in faith, believing that God is present with us and hears those that diligently seek Him.

  • Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

We can't get too close or have too much of the presence of God. There is always more because God desires for us to be filled and then walk in His Holy Spirit.

  • Leviticus 2:12 As for the oblation of the firstfruits, ye shall offer them unto the LORD: but they shall not be burnt on the altar for a sweet savor.
  • 13 And every oblation of thy meat offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meat offering: with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt.

Salt both preserves and makes all things taste good. It brings out the flavor of the offering.
This can remind us of the verse about our speech.

  • Colossians 4:6 Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

Be ready in season and out of season. The old timers used to call this being prayed up.

  • Leviticus 2:14 And if thou offer a meat offering of thy firstfruits unto the LORD, thou shalt offer for the meat offering of thy firstfruits green ears of corn dried by the fire, even corn beaten out of full ears.
  • 15 And thou shalt put oil upon it, and lay frankincense thereon: it is a meat offering.
  • 16 And the priest shall burn the memorial of it, part of the beaten corn thereof, and part of the oil thereof, with all the frankincense thereof: it is an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

First fruits means the first of the harvest. Christ was the first fruits of the resurrection. It is an offering of Thanksgiving.

The oil may very well represent the Holy Spirit. The oil was poured out upon the meal offering just as the Holy Spirit is poured out on those that believe in Jesus Christ and have had their sins cleansed by faith in the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

Frankincense is a fragrant plant used for incense and was used to provide a good fragrance. The offering of Jesus was like frankincense.

The fine flour represents the bruising or the test of endurance. Jesus sacrificed himself completely to give us the bread of life or bread of God.

We can read the Old Testament and find almost all of it pointing to the coming of Jesus Christ to save mankind from their sin and bring them or reconcile them back to God.

We are separated from God because of the sin that Adam allowed to come upon all through his disobedience. That is why a perfect man had to die to reverse that curse and reconcile man back to God. This was indeed, Jesus Christ.

All these offerings and sacrifices had to be done a certain way and not just any old way they chose. It had to be done according to the plan of God indicating the perfect plan of God that was to come and redeem us back to God. One way, one plan and only one way. DC

  • John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
