Leviticus Chapter 5

  • Leviticus 5:1 And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing, and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it; if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity.
  • 2 Or if a soul touch any unclean thing, whether it be a carcass of an unclean beast, or a carcass of unclean cattle, or the carcass of unclean creeping things, and if it be hidden from him; he also shall be unclean, and guilty.
  • 3 Or if he touch the uncleanness of man, whatsoever uncleanness it be that a man shall be defiled withal, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty.
  • 4 Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these.
  • 5 And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing:
  • 6 And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the LORD for his sin which he hath sinned, a female from the flock, a lamb or a kid of the goats, for a sin offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his sin.
  • 7 And if he be not able to bring a lamb, then he shall bring for his trespass, which he hath committed, two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, unto the LORD; one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering.
  • 8 And he shall bring them unto the priest, who shall offer that which is for the sin offering first, and wring off his head from his neck, but shall not divide it asunder:
  • 9 And he shall sprinkle of the blood of the sin offering upon the side of the altar; and the rest of the blood shall be wrung out at the bottom of the altar: it is a sin offering.
  • 10 And he shall offer the second for a burnt offering, according to the manner: and the priest shall make an atonement for him for his sin which he hath sinned, and it shall be forgiven him.
  • 11 But if he be not able to bring two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, then he that sinned shall bring for his offering the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering; he shall put no oil upon it, neither shall he put any frankincense thereon: for it is a sin offering.

In the case where the person was poor and did not have offerings that those that owned cattle had, they could bring pigeons and turtledoves.

  • Leviticus 5:12 Then shall he bring it to the priest, and the priest shall take his handful of it, even a memorial thereof, and burn it on the altar, according to the offerings made by fire unto the LORD: it is a sin offering.
  • 13 And the priest shall make an atonement for him as touching his sin that he hath sinned in one of these, and it shall be forgiven him: and the remnant shall be the priest's, as a meat offering.
  • 14 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,
  • 15 If a soul commit a trespass, and sin through ignorance, in the holy things of the LORD; then he shall bring for his trespass unto the LORD a ram without blemish out of the flocks, with thy estimation by shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass offering:
  • 16 And he shall make amends for the harm that he hath done in the holy thing, and shall add the fifth part thereto, and give it unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering, and it shall be forgiven him.
  • 17 And if a soul sin, and commit any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the LORD; though he knew it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity.
  • 18 And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his ignorance wherein he erred and knew it not, and it shall be forgiven him.
  • 19 It is a trespass offering: he hath certainly trespassed against the LORD.

In this chapter we learn more about the offerings for sin and trespass. We see clearly that even if they didn't know they did wrong, they were still guilty before God and had to bring an offering to the Lord where blood was shed and then their sin could be forgiven. They were guilty whether or not they knowingly sinned.

The sin offering represents the price required to atone for sin or for the transgression of God's holy law.

Flesh and blood is corruptible and cannot enter the kingdom of God in that condition. Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God.

There is no one that is righteous for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Sin defiles the heart and that sin must be forgiven and removed in order to enter into eternal life.

Sin can only be cleansed by the death of the sinner to fulfill the requirement for disobedience to the law they had broken. When they brought a sin offering, it reminded them of the consequences of sin.

It also reminded them of the great need for a savior. We need to be saved from sin. Sin is declaring us guilty before God and causing our souls to be lost for eternity.

The sin offering in the Old Testament was a temporary offering which pointed toward the perfect sacrifice that was to come in the form of a perfect sinless human being we now know as Jesus Christ the Son of God.

The sin offering was not a sweet savor and was not pleasing to God. The sin offering could not enter the holy place but had to be taken outside of the camp to be burned similar to the crucifixion of Jesus without the camp.

Here is it spoken of in the book of Hebrews

  • Hebrews 13:11 For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp.
  • 12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.

The sin offering was required to make atonement for sin. It had to be without spot or blemish, perfect in every way. If it would not have been perfect, they would have to die for its own sin. Jesus lived as a man born of woman yet without any sin. He was the first and only man to live upon the earth without sin so that He could quality as a perfect sacrifice to die for our sin and for the sins of the whole world. It will only count however, for those who believe in Him.

To believe in something means to partake of, believe in and be part of. To believe means to accept, obey and follow.

The blood of the sin offering was sprinkled seven times before the veil of the sanctuary. The sprinkling of blood was required to approach into God's presence.

Now when one comes to Christ, God's perfect sacrifice for sin, the Holy Spirit convicts or points out to us our sin and our need to repent and believe in Jesus Christ to take away our sin.

When we respond and obey the drawing power of the Holy Spirit, we become born again by the same spirit. We have been cleansed and forgiven of all sin. It is not held against us any longer. We do not have to make any other sacrifices but only begin to live in the newness of life by following the Lord from then on.

The Old law shows us the seriousness of sin and that we can't wink at it and take it lightly. We must get forgiveness and turn away from those old ways and serve God with a new beginning and a new life in the spirit. This living water given to us when we come to Christ for salvation is freely given.

We don't receive this new way by doing great deeds or buying it with money. It is freely given. Should we not share this message freely as it was freely given to us.
